Gabriola in Every Sense

with Patsy Ludwick

Tuesday, August 19th, 10am-12noon, The Commons

Does a sound have a colour? a taste? a shape? a personality? What does a breeze look like? How old is the north wind? Can you hear the clouds? What colour is the rain? Come and explore the amazing world of synesthesia (which may sound like an upper respiratory infection, but it’s not!). Together we can have some fun with natural and human-crafted materials to make a mural of our community.

Fee: $5. (free with a festival pass). This workshop is suitable for all ages, 11 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The G.I.R.Orchestra

with Dinah D and Tina Jones

Join Tina Jones and Dinah D in search of “stuff” from the Gabriola Island Recycling Organization (G.I.R.O.) to transform into musical magic. Participants will get to make a giant "clank-bang" instrument designed to be played by several people at once, and some smaller and very exotic rhythm instruments. Get hip while weaving rhythmic patterns, melodic pitches, and musical meanderings culminating in a final concert. The result will be an exciting instrument, and we'll be making music! The Depot will never be the same...

Monday, July 28th, 1:00pm-2:30pm, the G.I.R.O.

Wednesday, August 6th, 1:00pm-2:30pm, The Commons

Wednesday, August 13th, 1:00pm-2:30pm, The Commons

Friday, August 22nd, 10:00am-11:30am (drop-in), The Commons

Saturday, August 23rd, 4:00pm-5:30pm, warm-up and performance at The Commons

To Register please contact the Gabriola Recreational Society at 250-247-2014.

Drop-in Friday, August 22nd, is $5. (free with a festival pass), and drop-ins may participate in the Saturday performance. This workshop is suitable for ages 7 and up.

Tina Jones is one of the most sought after vocal artists and trumpet/flugelhorn players on the West Coast. She also loves working with kids, and has taught voice and music fundamentals to all ages.

Dinah D, in addition to being a wild woman bass player, loves exploring the world of sound, and believes anything you can hit or blow into can create music. She and Tina teach the popular ‘Melody Makers’ through the Gabriola Recreational Society.

An Avian Apparition is a performance piece conceived by Deborah Dallyn and Dinah D (both live at Degnen Bay) specifically for the bay. The piece has two components: the launch of a hundred floating lantern replicas of local birds; and birdsong and other “found” sounds from around the bay performed by host of humans. To be a participant in this extraordinary happening, please sign up for one of the following workshops.

All ages are welcome to participate in the performance! Children age 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, be able to stay awake past 9:30 pm, and be able to work by lantern light.

The Gabriola Beach Gamelan

with Andreas Kahre

Friday, August 22nd, 6:30pm–8pm, Drumbeg Park

There is a reason it's called Drumbeg: Come explore the sounds that a sandstone beach can make. We will use driftwood, rocks, water, wind, and a number of simple, home-built devices ( including thoobs and ploppers, puddlepaddles and at least one pheep) and some of the rhythmic principles of Indonesian Gamelan to create an "elemental" percussion orchestra that plays some real rock music. It's time to hit the beach!

This workshop is suitable for ages 11 and up.

Spectators are welcome at 7:30pm!

Andreas Kahre is a percussionist and audio artist who has worked with Gamelan and other world percussion for more than twenty years.
