Are you familiar with Mary Margaret O'Hara? Then all you need to know is that she's coming to Gabriola Island on January 29th with acclaimed Vancouver cellist and musical collaborator Peggy Lee. Their collaboration is entitled 'Beautiful Tool' and, together with guests J.P. Carter on trumpet, Ron Samworth on guitar, and Dylan van der Schyff on drums, they performed original songs (including material from the internationally famed album 'Miss America'), covers, and collective improvisations.
"… there’s something hauntingly unique and timeless about her music; Mary Margaret O’Hara sounds like no one else." CBC
If you don't know of her, think of discovering one of the great artists, and one of the most unique personalities of our time. Hailed as “a national treasure” by R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, O’Hara has appeared as a guest artist on numerous records and soundtrack albums over the years for artists as varied as The Henrys and Morrissey. She is best known for 'Miss America' released in 1988, which was recently listed by Chart Magazine as the 14th best album of all time. NOW magazine of Toronto named Miss America the #3 album of the last 20 years, and Mojo Magazine (UK) listed it as one of the top 100 albums of the 20th Century. Peggy Lee is both a highly sought after cellist, and one of the most original compositional voices around. She is currently a member of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, Standing Wave, Wayne Horvitz's Gravitas Quartet, Talking Pictures, and the Tony Wilson Sextet. In 2005 Peggy received the Freddie Stone Award for integrity and innovation in music.

Adrian Brendel & Michelle Mares

Thursday, December 15th, 7:30pm, Phoenix Auditorium. The Haven, Gabriola Island
Lulu and Liz Lutz were very pleased to present Adrian Brendel, cellist, and Michelle Mares, pianist, Thursday, December 15th, 7:30pm, Phoenix Auditorium.
Adrian Brendel has quickly established himself as one of the leading cellists of his generation, performing extensively as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, the US, and Japan. His recent two year partnership with his father Alfred Brendel, performing all of Beethoven’s music for cello and piano at venues throughout the world, was a huge public and critical success. Their recording of the A major Sonata is a top recommendation on the BBC’s “Building a Library Programme”.
Canadian pianist Michelle Mares has won top prizes in national and international piano competitions. She has concertized extensively in Canada and in Europe performing with virtually every major Canadian orchestra as a soloist. Having recently returned to her native West Coast after nearly 2 decades in Europe, Michelle has now settled in Victoria.
These two musicians met and worked together 20 years ago in Cornwall at a chamber music festival working with their mentor, the Hungarian composer, Gyorgy Kurtag. Adrian is performing in Calgary Dec 8, and had a few open days on his schedule. He and Michelle were talking on the phone, and they thought it would be fun to play together again. Michelle suggested Gabriola. What good news for us!
