Announcing the
Lulu ‘Classical Women’ 2011 Calendar!
Thank you to all who joined us for the launch party on Thursday, September 2nd at Raspberry’s Jazz Café!
Lulu, in collaboration with renowned Gabriola photographer, Carolyn Davey, and twelve extraordinary Gabriola women, has created a calendar of artful nudes called ‘Classical Women’. This project has been a year in the making and, with generous support from individuals and businesses from Gabriola and beyond, is now a reality. We are grateful to all those who have helped make it happen! Proceeds from the sale go toward Lulu’s ongoing mandate to support the performing arts on Gabriola.
Copies are available at several Gabriola outlets, or directly from Lulu, either by sending an e-mail to calendar@luluperformingarts or by following the link below:

A Summer Recital
Featuring Rachel Capon, cello
With Leah Hokanson, piano; and Toby Macklin, oboe
7:30 pm, Wednesday, August 11, 2010, Phoenix Auditorium
A dynamic and versatile cellist, Rachel Capon has performed across Canada as a soloist and chamber musician. Moving to Ontario in 2007, Rachel won a seat with the Kingston Symphony for the 08/09 season, while studying with Wolf Tormann in Kingston Ontario.
Last August Rachel moved to Toronto. It has been a wonderful year of new directions and development. Rachel has been collaborating with the Alchemy Opera Project from Northampton Massachusetts to develop an improvised opera/physical theater piece for cello and baritone voice. She has also been enjoying working on recordings with her brother Jesse in his studio The Magnolia. Getting to come home to Gabriola and share her music with the community is always a joy. She feels very honored to get to hail from such a special place.
Ms. Capon studied with Pamela Highbaugh Aloni and Paula Kiffner at the University of Victoria where she attained her Bachelor of Music in 2007. Additional studies include the Banff Centre, Tafelmusik Summer Institute in Toronto, Domain Forget, and the Orford Arts Centre, in Quebec.
Toby Macklin studied oboe in the UK with James MacGillivray and Keith Marshall. He has lived on Gabriola Island for four years, after spending most of his adult life in Egypt and Cyprus. We on Gabriola feel we have reawakened his natural gifts as an oboist. He is now one of our treasures.
Leah Hokanson needs no introduction. The creator of Lulu, she is one of the leading lights of the music world here. An amazing artist and personality, she brings huge focus, virtuosity and commitment to every note.

STITCH
an a capella opera for three women
and three sewing machines
Thursday, May 13th, 7:30pm (6pm stitchery display and sale; 6:45pm artists’ chat), at the Gabriola Community Hall
Music by Juliet Palmer
Text by Anna Chatterton
Performed by Christine Duncan, Patricia O’Callaghan &
Neema Bickersteth.
An Urban Vessel Production
From the abuse of the sweatshop to the fantasy of costume and the empowerment of sewing-it-yourself, the sewing machine has been a force for exploitation and liberation since its invention in the 19th century. Anchored in the sounds and rhythms of sewing, Stitch uncovers the emotional layers of the relationship between woman and barely-tamed machine.
The Toronto Star writes "A rogue brace of creative spirits cuts through the couture and sweeps us straight into a sewing sweatshop in Stitch. Billed as ‘an a cappella opera for three women and three sewing machines,’ it crosses so many genres as to be in a category of its own… Imagine an opera presented outside a theatre, without a stage or orchestra. It doesn’t seem like opera at all – until you realise how much a librettist, composer and three vocalists can accomplish with the simplest of means. That’s an art."
Stitch was nominated for two Dora Awards in 2008 for Outstanding Production, Opera; and Outstanding New Musical. Click below to see an excerpt:
