Lulu Turns 10!

Remember when she was just a twinkle in our eye? Now Lulu is turning 10!

That's right - it was almost 10 years ago that a group of music lovers got together and started dreaming about bringing more performing arts to Gabriola. Lulu Performing Arts was born, and after nine seasons, the dream has been fulfilled - big time!

Lulu has produced over 50 concerts, four festivals (The Elements: A Festival of Nature in Performance; The Gabriola Summer of Sound; Hey Romale! mini-fest; and The Big Fish Music Festival), workshops, soundwalks, talks, and more. From classical to contemporary to jazz to world music, some highlights include: Mary Margaret O'Hara, Alpha Yaya Diallo, Phil Dwyer, Adrian Brendel, Bill Horvitz Band, Peripheral Vision, Jean-Pierre Doucet, Matuto, Benjamin Butterfield, The Darren Sigesmund Quintet, Christian Zehnder, The Kovich String Quartet, Bruce Vogt, the Brothers Arntzen Brass Band (with special guest Lloyd Artnzen), Michelle Mares, East Van Strings, Joe Trio, Oliver Swain and Glenna Garramone, 'Stitch' featuring Christine Duncan, Patricia O'Callaghan and Neema Bickersteth (remember the fantastic fabric art display in the Community Hall?), Don Thompson, Trio Voce, Terence Tam and Lorraine Min, Tambura Rasa, Stringband Reunion, as well as many of Gabriola's finest performing artists. It's been an extraordinary adventure so far!

To celebrate our 10th season, we wanted to give a birthday gift to the community, and in particular to local performing artists. Gabriola boasts an eclectic array of professional performing artists: from classical, jazz, and acoustic/roots musicians, to performance poets and actors, to dancers and circus artists. We figured - what better way to celebrate than to support all that is uniquely Gabriola!

So stay tuned! From February to June, 2015, Lulu Performing Arts--in collaboration with the Gabriola Arts Council--will present our 10th birthday season celebration. Our first event is coming right up on February 14th from 7pm-10pm at the Community Hall. Dances of Love and Seduction will feature dancer extraordinaire, Gwen Spinks, and a band of Gabriola all-stars led by Victor Anthony. Advance Tickets are $20 and available at the Village Liquor Store. Not to be missed!

And more Lulu events on the way!
